Question by Carlos Pernet · Jul 26, 2018 at 05:02 PM · horizon 7.0

How to get USB headset working correctly ?

Hi everyone.

I'm currently using Wyse P25 thin clients to access floating instant clone W7 SP1 x64 desktops on VMware Horizon 7.5, and I'd like to deploy a soft-phone from our VOIP infrastructure vendor.
We are using USB headsets from Plantronics (PLT600) and Senheiser (Don't have the model name right now).

At first, I tried to bridge the headset. It works pretty well for both in and out audio, but it's using USB redirection, which is not supposed to be the best option (plus, I only tried on LAN, but I think it might not be as good if I use this through WAN).
I then tried to remove the headset from bridged devices, install the Teradici Virtual Audio Driver in the base image, set it to default playback and recording device, and activate the local usb audio driver on the Zero client, which is supposed to be the best configuration, specially for mic performance.
I face no problem with the sound playback, but the mic level is very low, so when I try to call someone, he almost doesn't hear me.
Activating mic boost on Teradici virtual audio driver mic device didn't help. I can see that the mic gauge doesn't go over 1 or 2 grades when tapping on the mic. When using bridged device, the gauge is getting much higher.

So my questions are :
- When using USB headsets, is the "Teradici Virtual Audio Driver" needed or is it only used for "analog audio in" ?
- is "enable local usb audio driver" really supposed to improve performance ? (and if so, why is my mic getting so low when used ?)
- is there somewhere a setting to adjust the mic recording level ?
- Am I missing something else ?

After hours of readings (documentation, blog posts, Community forum posts, etc...), I still didn't find a cristal clear explanation of what's needed in that configuration.

Has anyone faced that kind of symptoms ?

Thanks for your help :)

Hi @Carlos Pernet

In the same scenario, we have seen many customers choosing Teradici audio driver over VMware audio driver specially for audio input in windows 10. In windows 7, I believe VMware audio driver should also work for audio input/output.

Regards,

Jatinder

I had a issue getting mine working in windows 10 and found that installing the Teradici audio driver 1.2.1 fixed the issue. Just had to select the teradici input on my softphone. Have had pretty good luck with it so far.

Hi.

I think my issue is due tu the mic on a specific Plantronics headset model we have. We tried with a Senheizer headset and had no issue with the mic level.

But still, the weird thing is that when bridging the Plantronics headset to the desktop (not using the Teradici audio driver), the mic level is good. But as it uses the USB redirection, it's not usable from a WAN access :(

@Carlos Pernet

The user experience was the reason why the feature "Enable Local USB Audio Driver" was introduced. Using this feature (by default it is enabled) the USB Audio device is using PCoIP audio channel and the USB device is not visible to the host OS. And the virtual driver is used.

When the USB Audio device is bridged or the "Enable Local USB Audio Driver" is disabled, the USB Audio device will be visible to the host OS and USB driver will be used.

For more details please check following KB article, https://help.teradici.com/s/article/1159

Thanks,

Slaven
