Question by Chirs Kleeman · May 26, 2017 at 07:55 PM · zero clientspcoip zero client firmware

Firmware 5.5 GA causes Zero Client to become unresponsive upon network connection with MC discovery options in network

I submitted a request some time ago to get support added for some smartcards, Firmware 5.5 GA includes these changes. I went to test the install on my Dell Wyse P45 unit and upon reboot everything looked OK until the DHCP discovery process completed with an IP assignment.

Immediately the entire client including mouse became unresponsive. - moving slow and acting like a CPU was maxed out etc.

Upon disconnecting the Ethernet cable to the Zero client, immediately the device becomes responsive again.

The device is so slow that you can't update the firmware, access to the integrated webpage is so slow timeouts occure and unable to get logs.

I attempted to use the on-board device reset and it did clear all options and I cleared the management status. non of this fixes anything as soon as a network link is established the unit slows down again.

I was able to remove the Ethernet cable, add an IP , directly link to a laptop with the same subnet ip's and access the Zero client web page and flash the old firmware back to the device.

My suspicion is that the options in my DHCP and DNS servers for the auto-discovery process to work with the MC are the cause of the issue. We use MC 2.2.0, using DNS SRV with _pcoip-bootstrap and _pcoip-tool set to a hostname and have the TXT record in DNS setpcoip-bootstrap-cert=(sha256 fingerprint).

Hi,

When you experienced this issue, did you have a web browser open to the web interface of the zero client?

We are aware of an issue that existed in firmware 5.4, where if you upgrade from 5.4 and have the AWI open in a web-browser, the connections can effectively DOS the zero client. This is fixed in 5.5.1 (in that it won't happen when upgrading from 5.5.1 to another version), however, you must close the AWI after upgrading.

You can see the issue described in the "Resolved Issues" section of the release notes for 5.5.1 here:

cheers,

-Patrick

@Patrick Mauro "did you have a web browser open to the web interface of the zero client?" - No

What I did was used chrome to load the 5.5 firmware once it was done I clicked reset the PCoIP process and closed the browser.

The unit started up, looked fine as I moved the mouse and then it got SLOW. So slow nothing worked. So I opened my laptop and went to the management page of the device and it took forever to load etc.

At this point I turned off the device and closed my laptop and began to experiment.

1) Unit turns on - No network connection, system appears fine.

2) DHCP happens and the unit immediately feels, lagged, CPU maxed etc.

3) Unplugging the network cable immediately the client stop acting slow and works again.

4) Pluged unit back into production network and tried to downgrade via AWI, time out of firmware upload.

5) Unplug unit from office network, plugged directly into laptop. Unit is fast

6) Statically assigned IP. - put on production network, lag

7) Unpluged from network, attached to laptop - fine, downgraded firmware - working now but without the 5.5 features I was hoping to use.

My network is using the DNS SRV lookup method to push out the certificate hash and locate the management console.

teradicip45.txt

I have a similar issue on a P45 freshly upgraded to 5.5.1. No issues before with 5.4.1.

Tried without open web console, no change. As soon as it has network connection (static ip), it starts to crawl i.e. become unresponsive and unusable.

Edit: Log from firmware upload attempt(s) that timed out.

Edit2: Direct connection to a PC had no issues, restored 4.5.1
